Historically, the Bible has been the best-selling and now most downloaded book in the world, in digital format. In 2019, close to 300 million portions of the Scriptures were distributed worldwide.

During the past year, 40 million complete Bibles were distributed, a record-breaking Bible layout, according to the World Scripture Distribution report.

In addition, the number of New Testaments supplied reached 15 million. In all, more than 315 million articles of Scripture were distributed around the globe.

In 2015, the Bible Societies distributed a total of 1.8 billion Scriptures, including 184 million complete Bibles.

«It is encouraging to know that by 2019 many millions more people will be able to meet this year’s challenges with the Bible in their hands. May the Word of God give comfort and hope in these difficult times,» said the director general of the World Federation of Bible Societies, Michael Perreau.

Some 3.7 million scriptures distributed to children

The report shows that 3.7 million writings essentially designed for children have been distributed worldwide. The majority (1.27) went to Africa, where 40% of the population is under 15.

The Bible Societies have also increased their efforts to translate and distribute the Scriptures in sign languages. By 2019, portions of Scripture were being translated into 29 sign languages used by 5.3 million deaf people.

Increase in Digital Bible downloads

Digital Bible downloads have never been as high as they are now. A quarter of Bibles in 2019 were digital, compared to 17% in 2018.

About 10 million copies were downloaded from the Internet. The largest growth was in Asia, Central and South America, Europe and the Middle East.

Together, most of the digital Bibles were in Spanish and Portuguese. The leader is Brazil with 1.8 million Bibles downloaded.

By 2019, Bible Societies also taught literacy classes in more than 20 nations to up to 165,000 people, and distributed more than 4.5 million Scripture tracts to new readers.

There are currently 148 Bible Societies around the world. According to the report on the statistics of the distribution of the Scriptures, only the number of publishing houses and organizations concerning the worldwide association is taken into account.
