Weaker older adults infected with Covid-19 should die in nursing homes rather than hospitalized.
It is the initiative of the board of the Belgian Society of Gerontology and Geriatrics. Which brought the doctors of the nation’s geriatrics.
Such a recommendation immediately caught the attention of the various media outlets.
The proposal was announced on the website of the directive; and it applies mainly to those patients with no hope of being able to survive the effects of Coronavirus.
Specifically, for patients with dementia and physical problems that weaken them. To such an extent that they already have a history of death of even a year.
“There is nothing we can do anymore, they are patients for whom treatment can prolong life, but they offer little chance of recovery”; Neele Van Den Noortgate, head of the geriatrics department in Ghent and a professor at the university hospital in Ghent, said.
“In hospitals there is nothing more we can do for them than provide good palliative care; of those who can also benefit from geriatrics.”
“It would be inhumane to transport them to the hospital to die there,” Neele added
Hospitals are collapsing patients in the pandemic, which is why these guidelines are most in place.
However, according to Van Den Noortgate it states that it should also be performed in patients with other serious pathologies.
“Good attention also means daring to realize that people go from life to death. As well as ratifying that the course does not extend unnecessarily.”
It should be emphasized that Belgium is one of the few countries in Europe; that together with the Netherlands and Luxembourg, euthanasia is a totally legal option.
