The High Court in Lahore, Pakistan will hear the case of 14-year-old Maira Shahbaz next week. This comes after a local court ruled in favour of the girl’s family by not penalising her marriage to Mohamad Nakash.

According to the Church in Need (ACN), Nakash has been accused of kidnapping the teenager in the midst of the pandemic by COVID-19.

Kidnapper has presented false documents

He has also been accused of presenting a false marriage certificate; in which he claims that Maira is 19 years old and that they got engaged last October.

In response, the family of the young woman objected to the situation by showing her birth certificate, which indicates the real age of the victim.

Lawyer fears for the kidnapper’s plans

The family’s lawyer, Lala Daniel, fears that Nakash is grooming Maira for the prostitution industry.

She is currently staying at a women’s shelter by court order, until a ruling is reached.

Lala said it was a «miracle» that the court had ordered Maira to leave Nakash’s home.

Call for prayer

«The developments in the last few days have been an answer to prayer and we are very grateful to everyone for their prayers in this case,» he said.

Daniel has pointed out the importance of praying for the case, so that God takes control; also emphasizing the fragile health of Miara’s mother in the face of this event.

On the other hand, Khalil Tahir Sandhu, who will represent Maira and her family in the High Court said there is hope for a good outcome.

«In terms of evidence to show that Maira is a minor, we are on very solid ground with a birth certificate and other official documents,» said the defender.
