Rodrigo Duterte, president of the Philippines, has shocked the nation by recommending that citizens «wash their masks with gasoline.
In one of his speeches, the president proposed that in view of the shortage of toiletries, they should wash the masks with the fuel.
«For people who don’t have Lysol, soak it in gasoline or diesel, and that (…) covid won’t stand a chance. Just find some gasoline and dip your hand with the mask in it,» Duterte said.
She also said that after each use of the mask, «alcohol or disinfectant» will be sprayed on it.
For her part, the undersecretary of the Philippine Department of Health, María Rosario Vergeire, quickly reported that the president’s statements «were a joke.
«You know how the president expresses himself. It was probably one of his jokes, especially about cleaning them with gasoline,» explained Vergeire.
Together, the undersecretary suggested that the masks should be washed every time they are used and that those of No. 95 should not be used again.
«These masks have components and certain filtering mechanisms that, when washed, become ineffective against viruses, so they should not be washed. After use, or after eight hours, these masks should be discarded or replaced,» the undersecretary added.
The president instructed authorities to arrest those who do not wear their masks properly in the face of increasing COVID-19 infections.
